Telecommunications Laser Scanning: An Overview

Commercially introduced in 1998, laser scanning plays an integral role in industries that require the collection of spatial data, one of which is the telecommunications industry. Implementing communications infrastructure consists of three basic measures: (1.) launching satellite technology where necessary; (2.) finding the right ground locations for telecommunications equipment (towers and paths of line); and (3.) finding a way to make ground infrastructure work in relation to its environment. Of these three measures, 3D scanning can be especially helpful to accomplishing the last two.

Telecommunications Laser Scanning: Mapping and Modeling

The first step in establishing ground infrastructure is conducting topographical and aerial mapping of proposed implementation sites. For the installation of towers, aerial mapping and subterranean mapping (the latter to discover utility lines or unstable terrain) may be sufficient. But for telephone lines, long distance topographical mapping is required as well. Typically accomplished by a time-of-flight scanner, which uses a laser rangefinder to measure the round trip time of a beam from the scanner to the scan subject and back, topographical mapping helps to establish line paths in relation to general terrain features, such as roadways, train tracks, hills and mountains, waterways, and residential living.

Once a path is chosen topographically, aerial mapping of the path, which occurs at a bird's eye view, is used to study the path for characteristics not visible from satellite view. With a path approved by both mapping methods, its design phase commences, which uses CAD models to model ground infrastructure in relation to its environment. Useful for both towers and line equipment, modeling equipment in relation to its environment has several benefits, such as anticipating public response to towers and line paths, as homeowners commonly oppose installations that could affect property value.

Turning Modeling into Reality

With all considerations made, implementation proceeds, using scan data as a reference. But the value of telecommunications laser scanning doesn't end with a project's completion. As long as the equipment remains in place, its scan data can be used for troubleshooting, maintenance, rerouting, and even reverse engineering as new technology becomes available. In addition to its superior accuracy and ease of manipulation, the usefulness of scan data to future endeavors is one of it main selling points.

Long-term Cost Savings

Regarding cost savings, scanners are commonly praised for their abbreviation of the traditional surveying process and the costly sub processes that it entails. But perhaps its greatest cost savings benefit comes from putting editable project data in the hands of the project company, a benefit that could save millions on large reroutes or retrofits by eliminating the need to hire out more surveying in the future. For more information on the cost of scanner projects and their price compared to traditional surveying, contact a professional scan service.

In my research on telecommunications laser scanning, I've studied the value of 3D scanning to telecommunications projects.

How to Use a Laser Rangefinder

Laser range finders used to be exclusive only for military operation. Today, it has been used by civilians for different purposes including hunting, building, construction, forestry and golf. This gadget works by bouncing a harmless infrared beam off the intended target. The time it takes for the laser light to bounce back is read as the distance between the rangefinder and the object. It is very simple to use and the readings shown on the screen are easy to understand and are very straightforward.

When using the laser rangefinder, make sure that it is powered by a fully charged battery. Weak batteries may create weak signal thereby affecting the readings. As you take your position, sight for your target. As soon as you can see the target on the scope, click the fire button and a red dot will be emitted to the target. Let go of the fire button and you will notice the red dot to stay with the target for a few seconds while the rangefinder fires lasers. Stand still while waiting for the readings to get an accurate result. As the device completes its measurement, read the results on the rangefinder display. Some would sound an audible tone once the result is ready while others display a notice inside the viewfinder.

You can use a tripod to keep the laser rangefinder still so it would yield a more accurate result. If you just bought the gadget, familiarize its use by reading its manual carefully. Some rangefinder have a minimum distance to target, hence below the stipulated range can not be read by the device. To be precise in your measurement, check your target. Objects with photo-reflective surfaces such as street signs can bounce light, for better visibility at night. Hence, objects like these can be a perfect target. Dark colored or matte entity reflects poorly, thus yielding to a less accurate reading. This device are available in the market as low as $85 and as high as $600. However, the aid that it gives to enhance measurement abilities of engineers, hunters, golfers, etc., pays off the money that this instrument can offer. Besides in ease in its use wouldn't hold you back from trying it. Who knows you might also be benefited by this very high tech instrument.

Volumetric Surveying

What is Volumetrics?
The measurement of the inside of a three-dimensional area is known as its volume. This is easily illustrated by looking at a coffee mug. By measuring the diameter of the mug and calculating its height, you can determine exactly how much liquid will fill it to the brim. This same method can be used to determine the volume of virtually any three-dimensional object. The complexity of a shape in nature, however, is one reason why it is necessary to hire a surveyor to do the necessary and highly intricate calculations for any land-type application.

Who Needs Volumetrics?
One of the most common uses of volumetrics is in the construction and landscaping industries. It is sometimes referred to as "cut and fill," in that material is cut from one location and moved in volume to fill another. First it must be determined how much matter-dirt, rocks, and so on-is to be extracted. Then a suitable place must be found that will accommodate the same volume of material, if not more. The location receiving the cut material must also have its contour (slope) and other factors included in the analysis.

Not only is it important to determine that the receiving zone is adequately sized to accept the transported material, but one must ensure that it will stay put. Municipal water utilities use volumetrics to measure the amount of water in a reservoir and how close it is to capacity. Mining companies worry about what they are digging up and where the excess-often called tailings-can be safely stored. Golf course designers use cut-and-fill measurements to scoop out areas for sand traps and use the removed dirt to build up ridges and smooth out fairways.

Using a Surveyor to Determine Volumetrics
The trained surveyor has a number of tools at his or her command. While it is possible to determine the volume of an area by using ground-based surveying alone, the easiest method will add in airborne surveying and the process known as photogrammetry (aerial photography). Using these two techniques together will help achieve the most accurate results possible. On the ground-based side, a surveyor will use a total station (a highly sophisticated electronic version of the old surveyor's transit) tied to a GPS network, plus a laser rangefinder. This latter device uses laser light to determine the exact distance from the base station to a particular point.

The resulting measurements are stored in a software database. Aboard the aircraft is an aerial camera that photographs the target area with fairly high resolution. Many airborne surveyors now employ digital cameras that capture imagery in a format that easily merges with the data collected on the ground to create what is called a three-dimensional digital terrain model (DTM). However, even older, film-based aerial cameras are quite sufficient to achieve similar results. However, the photos must go through a secondary digitization process in order to prove useful in building the DTM.

Calculations
To determine the volume of a particular area, first the boundaries are pinpointed using standard surveying methodology. These are tied to specific points in space through the use of GPS, which is accurate to within a few centimeters or better. These boundaries are digitized and then imported to the airplane's navigation system, at which point aerial photographs are taken of the entire area.

Using some very sophisticated software, a DTM is generated through the manipulation of data from both air and ground sources. By combining these methods to determine the volumetrics of a particular 3D area, one can usually achieve accuracy within the three-percent range. It is the rare job indeed that would require anything more accurate.

Alabama Deer Hunting FAQ's

When you speak about hunting, one of the most popular sports in North America is Alabama deer hunting. In line with this, some frequently asked questions are presented here to aid readers and potential hunters in dealing with this kind of sports.

o What is the hunting season in Alabama?

Normally, the season for Alabama deer hunting opens around October up to January. This season is divided according to the major type of tool for deer stalking: the bow hunting and the gun hunting. The bow season starts around October 15th while the gun season begins in mid-November. Both seasons run up to the 31st of January. Over all, there are 108 days for a hunter to harvest a deer.

o What type of deer is being hunted in Alabama?

The most sought after kind of deer not just in Alabama but in most parts of North America, is the white-tailed deer or the Virginia deer. This medium-sized deer is native to United States, Mexico, Canada, South America, and Central America. They also thrive on the east of Rocky Mountains. Though this deer can very well adapt to any habitat, they love the prairie, savanna woodlands, and sage, which makes Alabama a perfect place for them. For their appearance, they have large antlers in proportion to their large tails and body size.

o What is Alabama's annual harvest?

The state has over 250,000 animal harvests each year, with the highest deer density in the southern region of the state. Good harvest management is taught to deer hunters to maintain and balance the deer populations across Alabama. This is in line with the major issue in tracking down an injured animal. They must ensure that the deer is not devoid of its right to exist. Thus, hunters are recommended to hunt with safety and ethics.

o What methods of deer hunting are allowed in Alabama?

A deer can be hunted using a bow, a modern gun, a crossbow, a muzzleloader, or a spear. Certain parts of Alabama allow hunting of deer with the use of dogs. The choice of method in deer hunting, in general, solely depends on the hunter.

o What are the limits in deer hunting?

All persons planning to hunt on the private lands of another must secure a written permission from the landowner. Hunting through the use of bait is also illegal. All hunting licenses must also be in the possession of the hunter during the hunt.

o What are the safety recommendations of the state government regarding deer hunting?

Most hunters are advised to use a small pen light while traveling in their hunting area. This is to help identify hunters during lowlight conditions. Another advice is never hunt from an elevated stand without the use of harness. This is because the most common hunting accident is falling from tree stands.

These are some of the questions often asked about Alabama deer hunting. If you need further information, you may inquire at Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
